History

Franklin Regional Medical Center was opened in 1951 to meet the health care needs of the people of Franklin County. The Hospital was built through the use of federal Hill-Burton funds and was formerly named Franklin Memorial Hospital.

In 1986, the hospital was purchased by Health Management Associates, Inc. (HMA) based in Naples, Florida. HMA owns and operates facilities primarily in the southeast and southwest of the United states and is a privately held publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. (HMA)

Franklin Regional underwent major renovations in 1988 & 1989 adding an Intensive Care Unit, Exterior Façade, Cafeteria and other additional services at that time.  In 1995 & 1996, Franklin Regional was named a Top 100 Hospital by HCIA/ Mercer Report.

In 1999, Franklin Regional added a new state-of-the-art Emergency Department and Outpatient Area.  This 8,500 square foot addition houses 8 treatment bays with two full trauma suites as well as an orthopedic procedure room and a room for the care of pediatric patients.  In addition, the 3,000 feet of renovated space, houses additional space for the Diagnostic Imaging Department and Cardiopulmonary Services.

In 2001, Franklin Regional renovated the Surgical Services department to accommodate the growing demand for outpatient surgery.

In 2008 Novant Health joint ventured with HMA to hold a minority interest in Franklin Regional, as well as assume full responsibility of their employed physician clinics.  In October 2009, Novant Health took over controlling interest of Franklin Regional and the hospital began full integration into the Novant Health System.  Novant Health, a not-for-profit organization, serves more than five million residents from Virginia to South Carolina.  In 2011, Jody Morris assumed the role of president of Franklin Regional and COO of the Triangle market.
